Pro tip: Right on red is a stop sign + yield to pedestrians

A handy, friendly reminder about right on red:

A ubiquitous traffic law that you may not have Googled recently:

If you live in a busy metropolitan area, please look up your personal region to make sure it's the same in your neck of the woods 🙂

Yes, you can make a right turn on red in Virginia when there is a red light, unless there is a sign that prohibits it. However, you must come to a complete stop and yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic before turning. You should also check for approaching motorcycles or bicycles.

Right turns on red are permitted in most regions of North America. In 1973, eastern states amended their traffic laws to allow right turns on red in response to fuel shortages. Since 1980, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico have allowed right turns on red, with a few exceptions. For example, right turns on red are prohibited in New York City, unless a sign indicates otherwise. Washington, DC will prohibit right turns on red starting January 1, 2025

It's even handy for everyone who visits NYC and forget to leave their car parked in Jersey!
